Samsung Galaxy Fold: looking to the future

Samsung Galaxy Fold is the world’s first folding smartphone with a flexible display (available on open sale). Equipped with an external optional 4.6-inch screen, a foldable 7.3-inch main screen, a flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 12 GB of RAM, 512 internal memory, a triple main camera, a dual front-facing internal and an additional front-facing external.

What does the Samsung Galaxy Fold look like?

The Samsung Galaxy Fold looks, to put it mildly, very unusual. When closed, it looks a bit like a glasses case in shape and size. In this mode, the smartphone is narrow, but very thick: 15.5 mm and it feels good in the pocket of jeans. The case, as befits a modern device of this class, is made of glass and metal. There is an additional 4.6-inch screen on the front, which has a very impressive perimeter frame, which is not surprising, given the design and size of the internal main display. The entire panel is covered with a solid protective glass with rounded edges and in the off state (or with Always on Display), the screen borders are almost invisible. The front-facing camera, sensors, and speaker are located above.
How good are the screens?

As we remember, there are two screens in the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The external screen has a diagonal of 4.6 inches. This is Dynamic AMOLED with a resolution of 1280×720 and an aspect ratio of 21:9, with a pixel density of 397 ppi. Visually, the matrix is high-quality, Samsung decided not to save on an additional display. The picture is good and does not fade in the sun. The size and format are great for quick actions: messages, viewing notifications, mail, and so on. Measurements have shown that the maximum brightness in natural mode is 343 CD/m2, while the color rendering is very sensible: the red and green components are close to the reference values, there is a minimal excess of blue.

What about performance, memory, sound, and autonomy?

The Samsung Galaxy Fold filling is another interesting point. We are used to all Samsung’s flagship smartphones coming to us with branded Samsung Exynos processors. And Snapdragon is only on the market of China and the United States. But the Galaxy Fold decided to limit itself to the version with the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. Just in case, this is an 8-core 7-nanometer processor with 1 core Kryo 485 at 2.84 GHz, 3xKryo 485 2.42 GHz and 4xKryo 485 1.78 GHz, the graphics is responsible for the adreno 640 accelerator. RAM 12 GB LPDDR4X RAM, drive-512 GB of fast memory UFS3. 0. So the lack of a memory card slot somehow does not bother at all. As well as productivity in General: its stock will last for a couple of years.

How do I use the Samsung Galaxy Fold and how convenient is it?

Given the new, very unusual form factor, it is difficult to clearly assess the usability. In particular, due to the lack of opportunities to compare with something similar. So this section is very subjective and based on personal feelings from using it. The idea of a device that can offer different screen sizes for different tasks is interesting and promising. But it will take some time for manufacturers and users to decide on the optimal form factors and designs. In the case of the Samsung Galaxy Fold, we have a small screen for basic tasks and a large internal screen for everything else. According to personal impressions, the small external screen is convenient to use on the go with one hand due to the compact size and small width of the smartphone when folded. It is convenient to make and receive calls, respond to messages in messengers, and scroll through feeds on the go.

It is worth paying tribute to Samsung: the company had the perseverance and courage to finish the job. Despite many difficulties in the development process and technical problems of early samples, the Samsung Galaxy Fold still reached stores. “Run-in” of new technologies and form factors is always a long and difficult path, where manufacturers fill the cones, in order to bring their ideas to mind later. Yes, the Galaxy Fold turned out to be a specific and in some sense experimental smartphone with no claims to mass popularity. It has its advantages and controversial places, but it already gives the impression of a complete device, not a prototype. Galaxy Fold looks futuristic, unusual, original and really expensive.
